SPANISH PROFICIENCY PORTFOLIO – NOVICE MID
In the world language classroom, we are not measuring how many verbs a student can conjugate or how many vocabulary words they memorized. We are assessing what they CAN DO in the skill areas of interpersonal communication, presentational speaking, presentational writing, interpretive listening and interpretive reading in the target language. Proficiency based grading also teaches students self-reflection, gives meaning to their grades, promotes intrinsic motivation, gives teaching meaning and builds self-confidence for Spanish learners.
Spanish instruction ranges from basic introductory content through Advanced Placement level mastery in both languages. Course work focuses on developing the four skill areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The cumulative course sequence also emphasizes geography, history, literature, and cultural awareness. A student should not register for a course unless he/she receives a grade of “C” or above in the prerequisite course and meets the proficiency level. If a student does not meet the proficiency level, but does meet the grade, he/she will have the opportunity to showcase their skills in the form a portfolio that can reflect their appropriate language proficiency.
Students should be aware that honors and Advanced Placement courses can require mandatory and graded summer assignments to be completed. Additionally, students are not permitted to drop these courses without administrative approval. College bound students are encouraged to take at least two years of an international language (Spanish I and II OR Spanish I/French I). Students pursuing the honors diploma distinction are required to take a minimum of three years of instruction in one international language (French I, II, and III OR Spanish I, II, and III) or two years of instruction in two international languages (French I and II AND Spanish I and II).
The “I Can” Proficiency Portfolio is a collection of activities that showcases a student’s Spanish language learning. This will be used in the case you did not place high enough to advance to the next Spanish level, but feel your Spanish proficiency is better than what was tested on the final SLO/IPA evaluation in March.
